For centuries, the Russian-German relationship has been characterised by different alliances, cooperation and hostilities. Although the relationship between the two nations seemed to have relaxed after the end of the Cold War and German reunification, old controversies flared up again with the annexation of Crimea since 2014 and the situation became visibly more tense, partly due to the poison attack on Alexei Nawalny. Diplomatic personnel were expelled from each other's countries.
