Global Topspeaker Dong-Seon Chang only had 10 minutes time to win over the audience at the Science Slam of the „European Science Open Forum 2016“ in Manchester. Ten minutes in which the neuroscientist gave it all. Ten minutes that in the end were rewarded with the completion’s coveted trophy, the „Golden Brain“. The science expert competed against numerous, experienced Science Slammers from England, Austria, Sweden, the Czech Republic came out the winner.

Dong-Seon Chang says it was a tight and exciting competition: „It was not easy to meet the taste of the audience.“ An audience that had travelled to the English city of Manchester from 20 different countries in Europe and where all age groups, from teenagers to retirees, were present. Chang had to work hard to convince them all as in the end, it was the audience in Manchester’s sold out Town Hall that decided on the winner of the Science Slam. The spectators were entitled to award each talk between 1 to 10 points.

Dong-Seon Chang’s presentation averaged at nine points and consequently received the highest total score. He demonstrated how our brain perceives other people and why everybody sees the world differently. A topic of research that the brain researcher holding a Ph.D. studies at the Max-Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tuebingen. In his capacity as Global Topspeaker, he illustrates this topic in his fascinating presentations as well and reveals, for instance, why it is so difficult for Europeans to distinguish Asian people, how our brain is moulded by our experiences and why our brain is social-minded despite cultural differences – astounding facts that the science expert explains with a great sense of humour and thanks to which he also won over the audience in Manchester.
