In 1995, at the age of 17, Ryk Neethling was recruited by several colleges in the USA for swimming scholarships. He received a package from Arizona Head Swim Coach, enrolled at the University of Arizona in the fall of 1996 and became part of the Arizona Wildcats. He became one of the most successful intercollegiate swimmers in history: he won an Olympic gold medal in the 4×100 m freestyle relay at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He is the former joint owner of the 4×100 m freestyle relay world record and holds several South African records. Ryk is the first South African to compete four successive Olympic Games.
